Protection insurance provides a vital role in making a homeowner sleep soundly at night or a worker not to have to worry about being off for a while sick. Despite the recent bad press about the way the insurance has been sold to the public in the past, the products offer good value and a range of covers.

Mortgage protection and income protection insurance are the two main types of insurance available on the market today.

On the face of it they appear to be very different products providing cover for very different items, however both are a type of protection insurance cover, originally known as 'permanent health' and it could be argued that they offer the same cover for the same risks, with a different marketing angle.

Both provide a monthly cash sum to cover out-goings when the policyholder cannot work due to sickness, an accident or a period of short-term unemployment.

Permanent health is more commonly known today as accident, sickness and unemployment insurance or protection insurance.

All protection insurance policies are designed to provide a monthly income on a short-term basis often no longer than a year, to people who cannot work due to one of these perils.

Policies pay out benefits if you are sick, injured or lose your job. Benefits are paid out on a monthly basis for the term agreed. The policyholder pays a small amount of premium each month by direct debit for the cover.

A brief history of protection products

Permanent health insurance emerged in the UK around 1900 and was sold in the days when insurance salesman knocked on your door touting their products. The 'Man from the Prudential' on his weekly visit with his notepad and receipt book, is a classic example of such door to door sales.

Permanent health insurance provided limited short-term protection for workers and their families if the main breadwinner suffered an accident or was injured at work. This was in the days before health and safety ay work, unemployment benefit, sickness pay, statutory sick pay and accident claims lawyers.

The concept of different types of protection insurance first emerged in the 1980's with the increasing home ownership and a consumerism zeitgeist, the market responded to a need for more flexible and desirable covers by promoting protection insurance.

Initially mortgage protection was sold in vast numbers to the new home owning public, often by the same company who was providing the mortgage or loan. The fact that it was often mis-sold to people who could not possibly claim such as the self-employed, or that people felt coerced into buying the product on fear of not being given the mortgage, did not seem to matter at the time.

People like to protect their property and religiously paid their monthly payments for cover.

The 1980's was also a time of boom bust and unemployment was high, as the Western economies restructured and heavy industry went into decline.

The insurance companies immediately saw a gap in the market and produced income protection insurance for unemployment. After all most workers had monthly expenditure, even if they did not own their own property.

Mortgage protection was only available to homeowners, however income protection insurance could be offered to everybody in work, tripling the market potential for sales. The fear of being unemployed at the time was enough to make the product an instant success.

The mis-selling scandal of the early twenty-first century has led to a drop in sales over recent years, however the products remain good value for those who are eligible.

Mortgage and Income Protection

Today both products are widely available to the public and can easily be bought online.

Mortgage and income protection often covers the same benefits for the same events and policyholders should only buy one or the other to avoid double indemnity problems.

The same personal data is collected in the same way in order to issue a policy, with the exception that a proposal for mortgage protection will ask for the current mortgage company details.

Both types of protection insurance are handled in the same manner from both an underwriting and claims perspective, although there are subtle differences between the two products and their respective policy wordings.

Terms and conditions regarding cover in the event of a claim are broadly the same for each types. Both types of policy will exclude people who do not fit strictly defined criteria, such as the requirement to have been in work for at least six months in order to qualify for cover, or not to have any pre-existing medical conditions.

The main difference between the two protection products is that in the case of mortgage protection, the benefits are designed to cover monthly mortgage costs alone.

To enable the benefits to cover the large costs of most mortgages, the amount of benefit paid under a mortgage protection agreement is usually significantly higher than the most that can be paid out under an income protection insurance policy.

Income protection is designed to cover monthly bills and out-goings and is usually restricted to a maximum of fifty percent of the proposer's monthly income.

Mortgage protection polices these days often allow the policyholder to top up the benefit to even higher limits to cover additional monthly costs such as public service bills and council tax. This additional cover is effectively to cover income.

You are going to hear about the "rules" of dating from your older siblings, parents, and other relatives, no matter what culture you grow up in.  Some of those rules come from age-old wisdom, but many of them are based in negative belief structures.  If you want dating to be alive in your life, it would be best to forget about the rules that leave you feeling confused, hopeless… and even— dateless.  Here are the ones to toss out:


Only the beautiful people get the ones they want.


It is true that beauty leads to preferential treatment in many situations, but when it comes to dating and finding a lasting relationship, looks just don't matter.  If a guy is dating a "perfect 10", he isn't out with her because of her soul— he is out with her figure and face and the attention she draws… and the strokes to his ego.  And when people stare at her, they don't see who she is, they see what she represents.  Guys who pick women based on their beauty are the guys who are usually looking for the next conquest.


The gorgeous people may initially get who they think they want, but in the long run, do they find the happiness  they want?


I didn't have a happy childhood, or come from a good family, so most people would not want to date me if they knew this.


How you choose to define your past is entirely up to you.  Every family situation presents challenges that you can use for growth.  Whatever burdens of pain, betrayal, abuse, or trauma you carry can ultimately be examined and put aside.  These hurts can be your reasons for why you don't date or find love— or, they can become the motivation behind your triumph.  If and when the subject of family issues arises in conversation, always keep your dignity and a strong boundary.  You don't have to tell people more than they can handle.  We may live in a world of the walking wounded but you can heal your scars rather than focus on them. You don't have to use them as proof of why you can't date.  You get to decide.


Your past gave you lessons and wisdom for the present and future.  Keep the nuggets and leave the rest behind.


If I could just have everything I always wanted, I'd be happy.


The tabloids are filled with famous people who have or had whatever they wanted and they didn't get any happier than anyone else.  In fact, many of them self-destructed.  Psychiatrist's offices and rehab clinics are filled with people who got everything they wanted.  Having anything you want does not equal happiness.  Becoming a person you are proud of, utilizing your purpose that leads you forward, having values that guide your choices, and surrounding yourself with friends who love and support you is what will make you happy.


If you are waiting to start dating because you think you don't have enough things—wait no longer.  Having more things has nothing to do with it.


I can't go out and date because I worry what people will say about me.


Somewhere along the way, you have to let go of what other people think.  Do what is appropriate, beneficial, and important to your overall wellbeing and happiness.  It's hard to take new risks when you are concerned about the audience of friends and family who may be watching you stumble. And since most success is built on failure, you can't turn away from your own path of discovery.  You just hunker down, try again, learn all you can, and forget about the folks with the telescopes that are seeking to report on your every move.  Sooner or later, you WILL succeed and then everyone can get off your case…including you.


There isn't anything undignified about getting out and dating— no matter what your initial outcome will be.  So what if it takes a while to find the one for you?  Shine yourself up and get out there.


All of my losses have made me wary and scared.


Loss is, of course, an awful experience, but it's part of life.  You can't control many of the events that come your way...and will continue to come your way.  But what you can do is mine the experiences for the gifts they gave you.  You are stronger, wiser, broader, and deeper because of each one. Not only will you be able to love again, your love will have the qualities of maturity, forgiveness, courage, and understanding.


You become an interesting, compassionate person to know and love when you have grown from life's losses.


The dating rules to remember are the ones you have discovered for yourself.  If they are based on integrity, honor, courage, authenticity, and kindness, they are the only rules you need to listen to.  This is how you become…a SAVVY dater.

How can you tell if a guy likes you or is interested? You noticed him when you were standing and talking with a friend. You think he noticed you, but maybe it was your imagination or just wishful thinking. He looked at you at about the same time you saw him. Your eyes met for just a few seconds, and then you looked away. When you looked back up, he was talking with some other people. Was he watching you as you mingled? Or were you making that up? How can you tell if a guy likes you? Why are guys so hard to read?


Here are five signs that he is interested in you too. If any of the following happens, he is probably trying to get close enough to ask you out:


1. He tells someone


Is he interested? He likes you if he tells a mutual friend that he wants to know more about you, or he asks other people who you are and where you're from. He is trying to act like he's "just asking" but his questions indicate more than a casual interest. And when he tells someone that he finds you attractive, he probably knows that it will get back to you. He's hoping it does.


2. The look


He gives you a look that betrays his calm exterior. Even though he is across the room, "that look" he has says it all. It is sweeping, from your head to your toes, and then his eyes linger on yours. You think you notice the beginning of a tentative smile.

3. The conversation


Does he like you? When he manages to get close enough to you, to ask you questions, he is interested. He appears to be listening and responds to what you say. He's moving in to the ultimate question, which is: "Are you seeing anyone." He would only ask this question if he wanted to date you, and he hopes the answer is "No." Never ever wear a ring in public. When a guy is across the room, he cannot tell which finger it is on and he may assume incorrectly that you are taken. If he doesn't ask you the question of whether or not you are attached, he may ask someone whom you both know.


4. He appears unexpectedly


He likes you a lot if he shows up out of nowhere. He can only do that if he has been asking people about your schedule, or he has been paying attention to where you are going and at what time. His face may turn red when he sees you. A sudden, "Oh, hi," is his way of saying, "I don't want to seem obvious, but I am interested in you." If you feel the same way, do not act shy. Stop and talk to him.


5. EVERYONE likes you


Is he interested? When you are well liked and a happy person, why wouldn't he like you? Of course he does. If you don't have a great life, however, now is your time to start working on one. Take a look at your career possibilities, body image, future, plans, and resources. You may be naturally talented at something, but it won't matter unless you work on your strengths. Misused or unused talents fade away. School and training do not.


These are the five signs that he is interested and he is on the verge of asking you out. Make it easy for him and be friendly. This is where relationships begin.

Your Ex Wants to Be Friends - Why It's a Good Sign

"But we can still be friends, right?"
It sounds so good and wholesome when your ex says it.  As if everything's gonna be alright, despite the fact that you just got dumped.


Reluctantly, you agree.  Right now, any future contact with your exboyfriend or exgirlfriend sounds good.  After all, you don't want to lose them forever.  And by staying friends, maybe you can work your way back up to being their boyfriend or girlfriend again.  By staying in close proximity to your ex, they'll eventually see how much they love you and ask you to come back.  Being friends with your ex sounds like a direct shortcut through all this breakup nonsense and straight back to reconciliation.  Right?


Well... if only it were that easy.
The bad news is you just got dumped.  Your ex might've been letting you down gently by offering to stay friendly after the breakup.  More likely however, your ex wants to be friends because they still want to leave the door to the relationship slightly open - and this is a good sign.


Understand that just as breaking up is very hard on you, it's also going to be hard on your boyfriend or girlfriend.  Even though they ended things, your ex still has feelings and emotions that make them very attached to you.  Making the decision to break things off doesn't mean those feelings just disappear into thin air, but it does mean that your ex probably put those emotions aside in an attempt to move on without you.  In that respect, your exboyfriend or exgirlfriend has a slight head start.

Wanting to be friends however, allows your ex to let go of you very gradually.  Instead of losing you all at once, your ex puts him or herself into the very comfortable position of walking away... little by little... while still knowing where you are, what you're doing, and most important of all: how much you're still sweating them.  It's comforting for your ex to realize they can have you back at a moment's notice.  It's easy for your ex to break up with you knowing that, as his or her new friend, you're always going to be in plain sight.


This is why, right after your ex dumps you, you'll need to refuse to be friends with them.  And not only that, but you have to walk coolly away from the relationship as if you really don't care anymore.


"Sorry, I can't be friends with you.  I love you as a girlfriend (or boyfriend), and that's not going to change.  I can't pretend to not have those feelings for you, while hanging around as your buddy.  Good luck with everything, but I've got to go my own way."


Imagine saying those words to your ex - whether you've already agreed to be their friend or not.  Visualize it.  Put the whole scene in your head, and run through it a few times.  What do you think your ex will say?  Even better, what do you think they'll feel?


Your ex wanted to be friends with you for a very simple reason - they weren't completely over the relationship just yet.  By doing things this way, you've essentially just broken things off yourself.  You're walking away and going on with your own life, while leaving your ex in the dust.  You've rejected them.


This is an amazing way of getting back on your ex's mind, and to make them question the break up.  Your boyfriend or girlfriend's head will be spinning when you tell them exactly why you can't be friends with them.  As they struggle to come up with reasons you should keep in touch, you're suddenly not answering your phone... or your email... or your text-messages.  Now imagine your ex getting suddenly desperate to be back in touch with you, after not having heard from you for a couple of days.
